What will You Surrender?

Jesus was approached by a young man with a simple question: "Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?" (Matthew 19:16). What comes after that is a little surprising to us perhaps. Jesus says nothing about believing in Him or calling upon the name of the Lord for salvation. Instead, we read Jesus telling the young man to keep the commandments. That is when the young man proclaims that he has obeyed the commandments - all the commandments - surely there is something more.

The young man had done everything he knew to do and still was lacking something. He is very much like people today. People acquire so many things: the newest cars, the best clothes, the up-to-date cell phone, the biggest flat screen tv's, and the list goes on and on and on . . .  With all this stuff there is still no fulfillment.

Jesus told the young man that the answer is total surrender to Him. Hear the words of Jesus: "Go, sell your belongings and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heave. Then come, follow Me" (Matthew 19:21). Sell everything! Give to the poor! Does God want us to do this? Perhaps! The point is not what is that you have to give up; the point is the willingness to give it up. It is at that point of surrender that we are truly ready to "follow" Him. What will you surrender?
